To me, Fine Brothers is an excellent choice for talking about YouTube going mainstream.
Fine Brothers had their hits, first the Lost Parody (Which was when I first came in) and then Kids React.
Also Fine Brothers is the showrunner for MyMusic, first sitcom experiment in YouTube.
Now, Fine Brothers always wanted to make a show in the tele-sphere. Or television as most people call it, and that is an appreciable dream, but there’s something about the web that works with the Fine Bros.
If you see MyMusic and its goals, it’s clear they’re not bringing TV to YouTube but rather the opposite... The brothers created a YouTube place for the TV show to breathe.
MyMusic, as the Fine Brothers wanted, goes canon with the other web shows. They want to create ‘The Illusion of Reality’ because the web as we know it is so linked to our reality that fiction on the web can’t remove themselves from the reality.
Some say that’s the best part about the web series. And I don’t have to agree to make the case but it does imply that making a show on the web is fundamentally different.
I talked about this few months ago, but the web series’s relation with reality is confusing. In television, you’re a visitor, seeing a world through a lense. A limited experiment granted by ‘God’ There’s sense of remoteness and separation that comes from watching television or listening to a radio.
Only books causally poked to our reality and audience addressed us but there’s still uncertainty as to who you are. Web makes the fiction a two-way street. There’s influence on the audience as much as the characters. Some say you are the characters yourself. But it’s more like visiting angel than anything.
Audience participation is core of what makes Web unique and people going to television need to remind that they mastered a different art and they need weld a different sword to be on television.
People think the theatre of the absurd or any postmodern book is confusing for student, but the reality is that people are breathing in the postmodern world.
I remember my teacher saying, “We have a created a generation that questions the idea of life itself.” And this is what we should have in mind as we study the internet.
One of the speeches I gave, I stressed the importance of written communication and the removal of the non-verbal language as a fundamental change in our society.
Writing is preserved for the future, not meant to be spoken like a language. It doesn’t have weight to it. Writing is bare and minimal like jerky or canned peaches, all the freshness is sucked and replaced with preservatives. When words are spoken, there’s so much more that people understand as the signal present themselves as extra information.
In writing, you have to remember what the person was and try fill in the gap of the word and its placement. (That’s why grammar is so import in writing, its placement is the only clue to your feeling about the sentence.)
We have replaced our tones and arm expression with arms and emoji but still, text lack a significant image.
Snapchat and YouTube is starting to change all that but people still use text for short-term communication.
Going back to the point, web is a different beast. Shaky relationship with reality, shaky communication leading to more primal urges and both going both ways.
We started to think reality as more fiction as we start to think of fiction as the reality.
We go around thinking about our image and our appearance (both outside and inside) as if we’re being watched or critiqued... we focus on sculpting our mediated persona than, ourselves really.
To some, the concept is ridiculous but most can perceive the importance of fame and somewhat beauty rising and fortune being corollary to fame.
I am an observer, watching our changing world. These loose thought are coming back again, and my creative juice is starting to flow. I think I can make it till the end of July. So stick around and come back tomorrow for another post like this. (Is that good or not...)
