Butterflies was one of the first documentary of YouTube phenomena and it followed 6 YouTubers: LisaNova, Dave Days, SMP Films, Olga Kay, boh3m3, and xgobobeanx.
This is kind of a retrospective... also it’s the response to boh3m3’s return video, Once More Unto the Breach
Boh3m3 had a hard time making in this place. YouTube, he felt was not his place, but really was it anywhere? He went job to job doing ‘manual’ work and found interest in carpentry now, but he is still lost as he were 7 years ago when the documentary was made.
If he went to pursuit YouTube rather than letting it go, will he become successful?
Not successful monetary, I would venture since he wouldn’t sell out like LisaNova did.
LisaNova went on found Maker Studio and now just left the post as the executive director and probably is rolling in dough... but I don’t if she’s that happy self... or she’ll ever be.
I mean she was in the business mind since the beginning. She was on MadTV for 4 days, 6? I don’t know... but she was in the business and knew her way around it.
Also the reason I respect Phil and Shane to a lesser degree. They left because, they thought that business and YouTube didn’t mix. The two wanted the freedom and the community, not the money.
SMP Films will certainly acknowledge that. In the movie, he was just about to engage to a wonderful girl. Wonder what he would say if I told him he was going to be divorced. Least he found another girl of Katers... hopefully things turn out better...
What about Dave Days or Olga Kay... they turn out fine... they rode the wave of YouTube pretty well and probably kept almost, if not all, their viewers to this day. So, not wildly successful but not a failure either...
Then there’s xgobobeanx. Jill went up the hill to exercise and came back a new man... I mean a new woman. Nice seeing her in Fiesta Movement again (Seriously, half of 3rd Fiesta Movement is from the 1st or 2nd movement.) She’s lost some weight and views but I like how she change throughout her ‘career.’
Anyway, a short look at people from Butterflies over and tomorrow we’ll be discussing a completely different topic. Goodbye!
