Reply to Letters to July

Some thought after one and half years...

1st - PBFB: I still think most of these thought and I was a good writer! Damn...

2nd - Meme Building and 5SF: Now, 'meme building' is just common 101 knowledge, but it's a important step to build on. And 5SF is still eternal. Also where's that movie?

3rd - Memetic Fame: As I said before, this doesn't much apply anymore because most memes are done by people who already have a foot on 'the water' and I talked about that in detail. Also, good thoughts on celebrities and YouTube.

4th - Butterflies: I moved away from Phil, Dave and especially Shane but others have moved away... Oh, and Olga is Olga (GOOD!) and SMP moved to Alaska with a new girlfriend (GOOD AGAIN!) (Speaking of Shane, I accidentally clicked an Onision video and my eyes are burning... like Mitchell Davis now works for Ron Howard and SKC is just following the trend and wow... he does suck.)

5th - British Invasion: I think one good hypothesis is that the YouTube Algorithm changed to reflect international presence and so UK hit the sweet spot and rule the waves (19th century again?)

6th - Barely Political: Wow, did BP fell into disarray just after I reviewed them. Mostly because YouTube decided to trash whatever original content they had... least I'll talk about them in the 10 year retrospective in 2017, so wait for that.

7th - VSauce: Same old since then, really, with the 3 channel gaining their own reputation.

8th - Girls are Better: In essence, I still do believe that fact. Although my viewing have been more male lately, probably top favorites would still be female.

9th - Broadcast Yourself: Well, YouTube have certainly forgotten about that... (frothing anger)

10th - Collabrakadabra and Tumblr: Tumblr have more power now, with moving to GIF format video working big for them (still buggy for long videos) All the member moved away from YouTube, most did by these days, and some turn radical and others apathetical...

11th - Rocketboom: I tried to a review on the tenth anniversary, but there was too much content. But I still respect the project to a degree. Shame it fell into shamble. Founder lost faith, I believe.

12th - Ads and Tags: Tags were so viral, that celebrity are now in the mix! (Buckets, anyone?) Still, ooh, ad recommendation! Grace and Anna and others anti-smoking ad and there's another one...

13th - Tags and Middle environment: Still very important, I do think this should the emphasize... as for the people... this and this. Oh, Dee Lamps now works for Girl Code... Nice!

14th - Matt Guion: Basically stopped making video and it's such a shame, but hey a career!

15th - Oh, nothing there.

16th - Renewed Recommendation: Dodie ~ Still happy, little more adult, having fun with Evan. Bethan ~ Yeah, she's gone 'corrupt' but she's still okay, in fact I think she's actually over the hump... Kim ~ Now makes some videos. She's still okay. Heloise ~ She's gone, Dottie is still here, despite the circumstances... (that was horrible) cute couple with Patty, though. Orla ~ Not 'corrupt', still awesome Rhiannon ~ Now makes poetry, still very good. Eden ~ In 'hiding' after 2014 Purge. Making a band? *A Short (long) review of New Media Digital content.
The fourteen videos are go from amazing to surprisingly flawed. I mean all the video have flaws but some less than others. I talk about Fine Tuned and how's it's off and that's good but also bad and others, too. Like Rose Window, I felt lacked in some fashion. The scenes doesn't come together for me even though Rose Window has a strong plot compared light plot of Fine Tuned, which is very much the style of Wheezy. The plot is flat or meandering but jokes and character holds the thing. Which this short does... great acting, great editing, great jokes. It's really emblematic of Wheezy vids. But somehow it doesn't work as well in short film format. Now to the things that I liked. I like I Ship It. It was good. It had all the parts I expected, perhaps more. I think the flaw in this video is the illustration of the character, I feel little off on that, not sure why. Another Edgar Wright references... Bad Burglar was great. It's straight comedy. I think you could forgiven on the flaws... just on the all the positives the video had... same thing with The Front Page. It was weird and it serviced correctly. Oscar's Hotel might be my favorite and 'the best' of the fourteen, but it's a style that PJ Ligouri have harness for years, so I mean I applaud and I think it's whimsical. But I almost expect from a master... Same thing goes to Bertie Gilbert and his video, Killed the Cat. What I expected, and what I got. Hm. The surprise, even though I shouldn't be surprised was the POYKPAC's Mr. Student Body President, which I knew they were great. There was a parody commercial and there was Comedy Thunder which happened in 2011, which they did okay. But I was surprised, nevertheless, at how good the setup and the acting and shot with the lighting and everything had its purpose, it was good. The rest are ones I have problems, starting Miss Akana's Miss Earth. I like Miss Akana, her video is quite refreshing and witty and very confident, but the short film that Akana makes... Lifeline just felt illogical... (you know if you're working 911 dispatch, you will expect or be used to what happens...) In the end, I couldn't suspend my belief on that one. Miss Earth, I totally the disbelief is in a coat... but the problem on that was... the cliche nature of it, It's all intro, I know, but this felt cliche+intro which is the big problem for Ethereal, The Void and The Parallax as well. The Parallax leans more cliche then intro, just because you don't need the intro for the character because we already know... Ethereal and The Void seems like a botched meal, good, if not boring, concept but execution was off. I mean Fine Tuned is like not making a dish, it's a raw meat... that's better than a botched one, because you can do something to the raw meat, but not to a botched meal... analogy went too far. The last one I believe is Instant Getaway, that is my second or third favorite. Kind of tied with I Ship It.
Best Mitchell role: Uh, The brother, The devil cabbie... the addict, HR, therapist and the intro man... Cabbie is best, though. Close second is HR... Addict, for best improvement... Yeah. That's it.

Oh, Hank...

Problem with Hank and John is that they are... optimistic? I'm not saying that the critics of the Green Brothers is pessimistic, but there's a sense of blind optimism?

They are a cheerleader type... a person who encourages the community to do stuff, and being entrepreneurs that's kind of their job...

What I'm saying here is... You know how parents at a cross-country meet sometime cheer their sons/daughters by saying "You've gone so far, keep it up!" even though they have way more distance to travel? It's intended as encouragement but it gets little... misguided.

Yeah, misguided. That's the word. They kind of forget the whole situation and blindly encourage someone and then go... 'I messed up' when it doesn't pan out...

So back in June, Hank made the post (second link) about racism and how it's "Improving"... obviously it lead to some backlash and Hank hastily defended himself... and then Ferguson happens.

Yeah, Hank probably regret that post.

Which is so embarrassing to call out on Hank again because he's doing same thing here, basically.

I mean Lindsey rightly called bull on this optimism, so I won't go into detail here, but Why?

I mean why are Greens keep making that mistake?

My intuition is age difference. I mean Hank was born '80 and John was born in '77... so they had their childhood in the '80s and their adolescence in the '90 and the dot-com bubble was for them early-mid twenties and they are already doing something...

For me, however born in '94, 9/11 happened when I was 7 and the Great Recession happened when I was 14 or 15 and now I'm looking at more stagnant world at age 19, feeling crippled.

The Millennials had this promise growing up... of prosperity and fortune in the '90s... like the internet and marketing and just everything seems to be handed in a platter... Then the dot-com bubble happened, 9/11 and the Iraq War happened, Great Recession happened and we're hurtling toward 2010's feeling so much loss... there's no hope and no prosperity and we didn't even do anything!

I felt as through millennials feel as though they're against the flow of society, got the short end of the stick, having so much promises and seeing it all just go away. There's resentment for past and disdain/anxiety for the future. It's though we're pushing the rock up the hill and parents are cheering?

It's not anti-authoritarianism, it's not like we rule and adults suck, but adults suck and we have to take up the slack... and cheering won't cut it.

Yeah... so, it's more sinister than I thought. Hank and John's cheering is seen as not an encouragement for a better future, but the leave of responsibility, as in we cheer and you do the all the work.

(Maybe the clash feminism and MRA comes down to the same point... hmm, interesting.)

So, perhaps it's rude say, but shut up and do the work, Hank. Don't need to be a cheerleader.
